Nutrition Trends for the New Year

1. Gut Health

Probiotics are more popular than ever as this trend carries over from previous years. The research has not caught up with the market, so before you pick a specific probiotic supplement or food, you might want to check in with your health care provider (or Dietitian) to see what strains may or may not be beneficial for you.

2. Diets

In spite of this step forward, the ketogenic diet – keto for short – is all the buzz. While the debate on whether diets work or not continues, it is best to try to eat a variety of foods, including fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Your goal should be healthy choices you can stick with over the long term.

3. Alternative “milks”

Dairy wasn’t the only milk in 2018 and that trend carries into 2019 with a full complement of choices – soy, cashew, hemp, pea protein, flax, oat, pecan, coconut, peanut. Each are tasty and different from traditional cow’s milk and from each other to find a place your diet this coming year.

4. Tahini

Think beyond the usual hummus. Tahini is great to put into sauces, dips, or even baked goods. It is rich in fiber and protein and can be found in many recipes in 2019.

5. Cauliflower Craze

Driven by the popularity of the keto diet, cauliflower will be the new go-to substitute for grain products. Think pizza crust, pancakes, biscuits, muffins, and tortillas made from cauliflower. High in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals and low in calories, this is a trend you should get on board with in the new year!
